Flightless wasp (bee?) at Torrey Pines

Our charming docent (see previous post) pointed out this wee bee. I am afraid it's a bit fuzzy, but the darned thing never stopped moving.

Oh cool! I found one skittering around the Sonoran Desert in AZ, just last week. It is extremely similar to yours, but only the bottom was bright red. I too, had a difficult time trying to photograph it, as it was running all over the place. I tried about 10 photos before I gave up. I'd be happy to send you a photo of mine.

That's a velvet ant aka mutillidae. It's in the same order as bees and ants (hymenoptera).
