Grand Central Station

I very much enjoyed the fact that my very first taste of New York was Grand Central Station, which is rather more elegant than any of the London Stations (though I like those as well; they are grand in a slightly more gritty way). I did the full geek bit for these two pictures; set up my teeny tripod on a marble balustrade, set the camera on timer so that I wouldn't shake it when pressing the button, and snapped with no flash. I rather like the way that one or two people have blurred a bit...

Uncle Vanya's Gloomy Trousers

A first try at some Serbian folk music; warts, bum notes and all. Something irresistable about playing a whole new style of music. Take a look at our little movie, rendered in fabulous monochrome.

Last Session until September

I made my last pilgrimage to the Star music session before going on holiday. I am very glad that I did, because it was a really good one. I find it very hard to work out exactly what it is that makes a good session. It seems to be something to do with;
  1. Who is there
  2. What mood they are in
  3. ...and only a little bit to do with how many

In any case, this was a 'slow build'; we started of with just a few, and more people kept dropping in as the evening wore on. I sat next to a very good lady bodhran player.

A Night at Oliver St. John Gogarty's

This nasty picture is the best I could manage with my mobile phone in the 'Oliver St. John Gogarty' pub in Dublin. Irritating banter from the guitar player, but some sublime music all the rest. This after two pints of Guinness and a curry (we took pity on Michael, ex-patriate Englishman living in Florida, who was lusting after curry, and didn't make him eat Irish stew) made for a good evening out. Heard an interview with Billy Bragg on "Front Row" on Radio 4. A little clip of music by Liza Carthy has me interested ... Waterson : Carthy :: Keeping it in the Family ...

Folk and Roots - Folk Music Concerts, Gigs and Events UK

I just noticed here Folk and Roots - Folk Music Concerts, Gigs and Events UK that DanĂº are playing at the Chapel, Salisbury. I think that a visit to see them is going to have to be my birthday treat.

Swanage Folk Festival

Went to Swanage Folk Festival. Met up with the MacWilliams and saw a good set by
'Breakneck Creek'
The lead singer also played Mandolin, whistle and uilleann pipes. We went for a walk along the shoreline, then bought burritos and nachos from the same stall we'd got them from years ago when we went to Old Sarum (for free). Janice got a pound off as a 'regular customer'.
